and praying till the very end

Father Ilia Kartozia, abbot of the David the Builder’s Monastery in Mtskheta, who was among the passengers of Norman Atlantic ferry on the Adriatic Sea, has allegedly been found dead.

According to Goga Tabatadze, head of the Georgian Foreign Ministry’s consular department, condition of rescued Georgian citizens is satisfactory. They are currently in the city of Bari. Georgian Consul in Italy Vakhtang Andghuladze is accompanying them.

Tabatadze claimed they got information from the Embassy of Georgia yesterday that another body had been found in the Adriatic Sea. They also received a photo of the body, which the parishioners identified as that of the missing priest.

“So far the only grounds we have to pronounce father Ilia Kartozia dead is a photo. It will be very lamentable if his death is confirmed. The state will do its best to carry out all necessary procedures to transfer the body to Georgia in a timely fashion,” promised Tabatadze

Reports say father Ilia stood beside the captain of the ship and praying till the very end.

The Norman Atlantic ferry caught fire on Sunday. Eight Georgian citizens were aboard the ship, Father Ilia Kartozia among them. Seven Georgians have already been found.

Out of 278 people aboard, 10 were confirmed dead. Rescuers took 200 people off the ferry. Majority of them are currently being treated for burns.
